| Biography* | Frederick Vollmer and Catherine Jacob were both born in Germany. She was 12 when she came to the U.S. with her parents. They met in Baltimore and after they were married moved to Annapolis. Their home and shop were in the same building which still stands in 1991 near the square. According to Annapolis. This was confirmed by Herman C. Vollmer who said that their home and shop still remained, although changed, into the late 1900's. business. Some of their tools are still in the family's possession in 1991. When Frederick died suddenly at age 51 all of the family except the oldest son, Frederick, moved to Georgetown to a location on Wisconsin Avenue. Apparently this was so that the oldest daughter, Catherine, could obtain work in the Government. She worked at both the Treasury Department and the Post Office. Apparently, "Aunt Katy" was the bread winner of the family. Her younger brothers, Herman and Henry, got jobs as apprentice pie bakers near where they lived. It is likely that Herman Christian Vollmer met his wife at the bakery or at least because of this connection. He married Margaret Mary Knopp, the grandaughter of Maria B. Knopp who kept a bakery in Georgetown. In 1976 Herman Charles Vollmer was asked for rememberances of his grandfather and provided the following: "My grandfather on the Vollmer side was Frederick Vollmer Born in Kingdom of Wurtenburg Germany, Southwest, Germany. Germany at that time was divided into numerous small kingdoms more like our states. I do not know the circumstances of his emigration to Annapolis, Maryland. He had a good business like Fortuna Leather Company on Wisconsin Avenue - leather goods and accessories. Made shoes, belts, suit cases, brief cases etc. His wife was Catherine. They are both buried in Annapolis at St. Ann's Cemetery near a creek. I sent you pictures. The dates could be obtained from the stones, but I do not have them handy at this time of writing. Aunt Katy as we called the oldest girl (Catherine) was the mother of Marion who sent you the postcard from Alaska. As of this time (1976) Marion is sixty-five years old. Her husband's name is Joe. Marions mother (Catherine) married Ross Skelton. They travelled in U.S.A and Canada widely. He represented a big Texas grapefruit company. Marion was actually born in Winnepeg, Canada but her nother and father were married in Albany, New York. She could tell you more. My father and his brother Henry got jobs as apprentice pie bakers when they lived in Georgetown. My father was a member of St. John's Episcopal church which is still on "O" Street in Georgetown. He was deeply religious and attended church and was an usher until he died. He was Superintendent of Painters at Veterans Administration when he died of stroke one day before retirement. He was never in a hospital. He was a baker, painter and good financial manager. My mother left all money matters to him. They worked hard together always. I rate my childhood as a happy one. Aunt Lilly married Robert (Uncle Bob) Campbell. He was a stone mason and good all around construction man. He too travelled with his family looking for big jobs. The lived for a time in Winnepeg Canada. The Vollmer home at 68 Main Street in Annapolis is still there (1973) when I took bus and visited Annapolis and took pictures at St. Ann's Cemetery. But you would not recognize it because it has been enlarged and altered so much. close to State House of Maryland on Main street. | |

Apparently there is a book titled Beutelsbach Walter Verlag quotes from page 394: "The vollmers (originally written Vollmar as the Christian name) might have been the most important family of Beutelsbach. The "Vollmarischen" (Vollmar group) plotted against the Duke in 1514; after the knocking down of the riot the leader Konrad vollmer was executed. A Captain Vollmer from Beutelsbach was granted nobility around 1810 in Wurttemberg service, his daughter Karoline was a governess in France and moved then to Ludwigsburg. The Vollner family has nearly died out. Fritz Vollmer has come in from Schnait. A genealogy of the family with five generations is published by Dr. Klumpp." |

| BUSINESS* | September 1617 | He was in business Resolution to sell the Jambi pepper at 26d., the Bantam pepper at 25d., and as many other commodities as may be. Request of Mr. Leske, the preacher, to have his goods delivered to him free of freight; some condemned him as worthy of no kindness, seeing he was, as it is said, sent home as a malefacto ; others supposed he was wronged because of his severe reprehension of sin in others who sought to injure him "by putting a trick upon him by a wench at the English house;" resolved in respect of his coat to deal kindly with him and leave it to the Governor to remit the freight as a favour. Wages of Joseph Salbancke ; his desire to write 200l. in the last joint stock, referred. Petition of John Curtis, master of the Peppercorn, "craving favour" for his goods brought home, referred, as it was conceived a great wrong to bring such a quantity of spices home, contrary to his bond. Committee to speak with Slanye, respecting the purchase of six or seven tons of elephants' teeth. Sept. 23.-Minutes of a General Court. Those of the generality absent to be fined 12d. each. Sept. 25.-In the case of the "rulers" of the porters, Robert Pore is enjoined to submit. Demand of Barrett referred. Difference between Martyn and the "Caldæan," referred. Consideration of the number of ships to be employed in the next fleet. To be at Bantam to command the factories in the Indies, and to examine, establish, and dissolve factories as there may be occasion in the next fleet, their tonnage, the places they should go to, and the stock they should carry ; some of opinion to send eight ships,-two to Surat and six to Bantam, one from Surat to go to Acheen and Bantam ; those from Bantam to go to the Moluccas and parts thereabouts, that the Dutch may perceive the English intend not to leave [off] their traffic to those places ; and by such strength the inhabitants there and at Banda will be encouraged to deal with the English when they shall find them of power to resist the wrongs put on them by the Hollanders. After discussion, it was held fit to send the more shipping, not to oppose the Hollanders in hostile manner, but to countenance the Company's business, that they be not put down or forced from their trade, "which, it seems, they (the Hollanders) do intend in all parts," but to send a good strength, both to the Moluccas and Banda, to purpose once for all and see what the Hollanders will do, "if a man of courage may be had that will not endure their wrongs ; as yet, they have only given hard words, but performed no deeds, and the Company's intents have been and still will be, not to drive a war with them, but to defend and resist the wrongs that may be put upon the English." Opinion that it were fit for the English to attempt Banda, and endeavour to expulse the Flemings, where the country people will assist, hating the insolency of the Flemings. Resolved to have, first Mr. Jourdain's, then Capt. Keeling's opinions, and then both together ; to hear also Augustine Spaldinge, Capt. Saris, Mr. Paiton, and others. Opinion of Jourdain on prosecuting the trade in the Indies, and dissolving unprofitable factories ; that Jourdain would be a fit person [for that service]. Description of the alterations and additions to be made in the several departments of the Company's premises at Blackwall ; these include the repacking and slaughter rooms. Sept. 26.-Complaints of Deane concerning his "half capital," of divers grocers regarding the purchase of pepper, and of other members of the Company who could not have their half capitals. in September 1617. |
