| He was the son of Emanuel M. Dees and Elizabeth Price. | ||
| Death* | 8 January 1802 | He died on 8 January 1802 at Jefferson County, GA.1 |
| Note* | He Here are Ed Harmon's notes on Daniel. The Three Daniel Dees Men of Johnson County Based on the Dees family data on the web, Emanuel Dees had a son named Emanuel whom we shall call Emanuel II. Emanuel II had a son Daniel, Daniel had a son Daniel who is shown in the 1800 Census as Daniel Jr. Daniel Jr., had a son Daniel whom we will call Daniel III. Daniel III decided to call himself Daniel Graham. Daniel Jr. left a will: DANIEL DEES Jan. 8,1802 March 1,1802, p. 32 Wife: Elizabeth to have the free informant of all my land. ..consisting of 2 tracts, meaning all that part of sd. land lying and being below or on the South eastern side of the Mill branch also one negro man Bremus, one negro woman Easter and negro girl Jeffy, household and kitchen furn.,plantation tools and bay mare, sorrel mare, stock and hogs...I lend to wife Elizabeth until my son John shall become the age of 21 one negro man. .and I lend one negro woman, one negro boy, one negro boy and girl beg. to son Edmon one silver dollar. .beg. to son Drewry all that part of above tract sit. on upper or N.E. side of Mill branch. also to son Drewry one neg. man and one neg. boy beg. to son Hillard one negro boy to be delivered to him when my son John shall leave ca to age of 21. .beg. to son Daniel one silver dollar..My wife a negro man "now in N.C. .beg. to son John all land sit. and lying on Lower S.W. side of Branch to be possessed by him sd. son John when my sd. wife Elizabeth shall or may decease also I give to son John one negro man, woman and 2 boys. Wife Elizabeth, Extrx., Son, Drewry, Exr. Wit: Thatcher Vivion, Jr., Ducet Dees, Nancy Dees, Rebecca Crawford. 671 Jefferson Co. GA Wills (1777/1893) Note in the will, dated January 8, 1802 that John, Hilliard and Daniel were minors. Also note the North Carolina connection by; “a negro man now in NC” It is believed that this Daniel Graham (I think he means Dees) Jr and wife Elizabeth are the parents of Daniel Dees Graham due to the following: Elizabeth Dees married William Barefoot in October 1813. William and Elizabeth are found in Pulaski County, Georgia after 1813. In the book The Early Court Records of Pulaski County dated 1819 you find the following notations: James Dees indicted for assault April 1813,John Dees owed the sheriff $33.00 (not said why. Its on p. 69 of the 1812 minutes.) James Dees died 1819 with minor children Sarah, Jordan and Elizabeth. Mary Dees was Admx for James. John Dees Adm for Hilliard Sept 7 1818 Jordan Dees and Mary Dees admr. for James Dees Jan 6 1818 Note that the Pulaski County Court records plus the following data, show all 3 of the minor children of Daniel Jr, as listed in 1802 to be residents of Pulaski county, Georgia before 1819. Daniel Graham is shown in Georgia Court documents to be Daniel Dees in 1826. 1840-1842 Daniel Dees Graham steals a slave in Georgia and takes the slave to Edgefield District, South Carolina to sell. While in Edgefield District, South Carolina, according to trial testimony, Daniel Dees Graham marries the daughter of Abraham Hurt. At the time of the Hurt marriage, Daniel had a wife and seven children in Pulaski County, GA. In 1842 William Barefoot left Pulaski County, Georgia and went to South Carolina looking for Daniel Dees Graham. Apparently the Hurt family was known to both Daniel and William, because William found Daniel at the Hurt home, where Daniel was living with the Hurt daughter. In November 1842 Daniel and Hurt lured William off into the woods and killed William, burying his body by a fallen tree not far from the Hurt home. After the murder Daniel returned to Georgia, where he was arrested for stealing the slave and eventually confessed to killing; “Old Billy Barefoot.” Daniel was tried for the theft of the slave and sent to prision in Georgia. Georgia prison records establish his year of birth as 1800-1801 which matches the 1802 will of Daniel Jr. Daniel was sent by Georgia to South Carolina to stand trial, for the murder of “his stepfather, William Barefoot.” In South Carolina Daniel leads authorities to the body of William. Daniel confessed, confessed the involvement of Abraham Hurt and was hanged May 24, 1844. With the appearance of Hilliard and John in the court records and the knowledge that Daniel Graham was actually Daniel Dees, all living in Pulaski County, you have strong evidence. When combined with the trial data where it states that William Barefoot was Daniel’s stepfather you have more evidence. With the recorded marriage of William Barefoot to Elizabeth Dees in October 1813 the evidence is piled pretty high showing that the published data in the Dees family genealogy, regards Daniel Jr and what happened to his sons and wife Elizabeth, is wrong. Here is information from Betty Smith. I haven't entered it as of 2007 as I just cannot reconcile. Betty J. Smith Oct. 04. 2006 Descendants of Emanuel Dees Generation No. 1 1. There are no deed records of Daniel Dees SR buying land in Jefferson County Georgia and he was never taxed on land (of course, he was only there for about 1 -2 years and he probably lived on his brother Duet Dees' land. From: Margot Woodrough [mailto:margo4it@tampabay.rr.com] Sent: Thursday, September 28, 2006 9:49 AM To: 'Ed Harmon' Subject: RE: Our Graham Family Ed, I keep turning the whole thing over in my mind and am struck with the following: We need a Daniel born about 1800 and Dead Daniel seems to provide us with that person. Not only that, but Dead Daniel provides us with the other 2 folks who went to Pulaski. Its difficult to believe that these are not the folks we are looking for. I feel comfortable with the E. Graham age 65 of the 1850 being the mother of Daniel. Making her birth about 1785 - perfect for a 2nd wife to Dead Daniel who apparently had two sets of children. If Dead Daniel and his wife Elizabeth died within a couple years of each other what happened to the minor children John, Hilliard and Daniel? Well, they went to Pulaski county that's what, but who took them or did they take themselves? Now, remember that old Needham Bryant from N.C. was close to the family and he ended up one of the earliest settlers in Pulaski. I think we need to know a bit more about Needham as he may be more involved than we know. (sorry, that just put another name into your pot didn't it?). |

Emanuel M. Dees1
M, #4808, b. 1705, d. 1770
| Charts | JOHN GRAHAM |
| Birth* | 1705 | Emanuel M. Dees was born in 1705 at Johnston, N.C.2 |
| MARRIAGE* | circa 1724 | He married Elizabeth Price circa 1724 at James, VA.2 |
| Death* | 1770 | He died in 1770 at N.C Ed, I dug out my NC topo map to see where Neuse River south of Smithfield is located in Johnstone Co. N.C. and while looking just happened to notice a road called Barefoot Road located just south of Johnstone county line in Sampson Co.. Route 40 and Rt. 701 headed south converge. Barefoot Road is between the two just across the county line. So Sampson county might be a good place to look. |
| Will* | 1770 | He left a will in 1770 Note from Betty Smith: Daniel Dees' father was named Emanuel Dees. He died in Johnston Co. NC in 1790. Index of wills. I found Emanuel on the LDS page but you have to take that with a grain of salt. I did a search in NC and found a few odds and ends. (Beginning of will of EMANUAL DEES missing.) Legatees: sons DREURY & DANIEL DEES; dau HANAH BENTON; dau PRESELA BRATCHER; dau SUSANA GUING; son in law THOMAS; grandau OLIEF HATCHER; JOHN SMITH , merchant & SAMUEL SMITH, his brother; wife ELIZABETH DEES; negro BERT; friend ROBERT HATCHER. Exec. son DANIEL DEES. Wit: NEEDHAM BRYAN, JEAN RATLIFF, WILLIAM DEES. Signed: EMANUEL (M) DEES, Nov. Ct. 1770. (I think this should read 1790) No idea what "beg"means. I did find out that Daniel's parents are Emanuel Dees and Elizabeth Price and that this Daniel was married to Elizabeth Wood. He had a son, Daniel, born about the right time to be your Daniel. Will keep digging. I found an index of Emanuel's will. This Daniel had five sons that I can find so far. Edmon, Drewry, Daniel, John, Hilliard. Haven't found any daughters yet. Emanuel's children: Drury, Dewitt Clinton married Nancy, Hannah married M. Benton, Priscilla married Robert Hatcher, Daniel married Elizabeth Wood, Susanna married Thomas Guing. I haven't proved most of this so take it as possible. Jefferson County seat is Louisville, and is east of Richmond Co.
