| MARRIAGE* | before 1760 | Catherine Marguerite Francfort married Sieur Jean Baptiste Bernard de Valcourt, son of Jean Baptiste Gallopin and Anne Marie Madeleine Bonnet, before 1760.2 |
| Death* | 20 March 1794 | She died on 20 March 1794 at Paris, France, Paris Archives Reference ET/XVII/1080: In a power of attorney given by Alexandre de Valcourt to Jean Baptiste Michel Devesquemont and Alexandre Jean Cauchy on 7 Dec 1794 may be found the following: Catherine Marguerite Francfort, mother of Alexandre de Valcourt, and the wife of Jean Baptiste Bernard de Valcourt, died on 20 Mar 1794.2 |
| Religion* | She was (an unknown value).2 | |
| Married Name | before 1760 | As of before 1760,her married name was Valcourt. |
| Note* | 2010 | She In 1997 William R. Yaeger wrote to Jane B. Woodrough about the original portrait of Madem De Valcourt. His letter is in MVW file. Here is the gist of it: Apparently there were originally two pictures. One was of mother, Madame DeValcourt and other was of a daughter. Apparently Eugene Carroll's will bequeathed two pastel portraits of Madam de Valcourt and his Certification of the Order of the Cincinnati to his cousin Adele Grant Watts. Adele predeceased Eugene so in May of 1951 he added a Codicil naming his cousin who was a sister of Adele as the devisee of the items. They were distributed to Nellie (the sister) according to the Distribution Order. Nellie Grant lived in Park Ridge, Il and died there December 9 1968 (by this time Jane Woodrough had a copy hanging on her wall. It is the same as the one MVW now has.) Apparently Nellie lived with her brother-in-law John L. Watts and after he died she lived with John L. Watts, Jr. until her death. "I have been in contact with John L. Watts, III and he and his wife remember Nellie. They also remember a lot of pictures which John L. Watts, Jr. took to the the Chicago Art Museum and was told they not worth anything. Then he just "sold them", writes William Yaeger. John L. Watts, Jr. died in 1987. His son and wife recall that neither Nellie nor John, Jr. knew of any history of the pictures. (Wonder why not) Nellie drew her will dated April 19 1951 leaving everything to John L. Watts. The pastels and certification were not a part of her inventoried estate. Nellie's will was entered into probate January 2, 1969 and her nearest adult relatives were Martha Lockwood, Edward Piatt and Francis J. Piatt all first cousins. (Apparently Joe Kearney made a note on his Piatt chart there was a description of "painting, etc. galore" might include the pastels. Since he made the note March 1968 before Nellie's death and mentioned his visit to Martha Lockwood it is possible that Nellie gave her Piatt things to Martha Eugenie Lockwood. Martha left a coin silver creamer and an oil painting of Sieur Jean Baptist De Valcourt and his son Alexandre to her son Eugene Lockwood. In 2010 Margot contacted him and he graciously agreed to have the portraits photographed and sent them to her. Margot note: Looks like Martha Lockwood might have ended up with the tea pot and the pastel was disposed of. I ended up with the tea pot through a circutitous route and Madam De Valcourt ended up on a bedroom wall in California. Curious that the picture of Madame De Valcourt was shown in "The Mudd Family" which was published in 1951. Eugene Carroll the person who bequeathed the pictures died in 1951. Just checked Eugene Carroll's data and found this note:This person wrote a letter to SLB. This person is a "guess" based on a letter 1934 to Stephens L. Blakely that reads: "I enclose a photograph of the pastel portrait of Madame de Valcourt. This is a portrait of your children's great great grandmother and came into my possession through Mother, who received it from her Mother. (I presume you have photographs of our grandmother and Martha Lockwood who had several of the family paintings. in 2010. |

My rough translation of that item on the first marriage: The first is the main body of a contract passed before LeCour et .... , Paris notaries, the 22nd of August of 1704 made between the aforesaid deceased M. Burgevin and the aforesaid now his widow on the one part, and M. Jean Baptiste Galopin, prosecutor in the Chamber of Accounts, on the other part, containing a transaction between them on the rights .... the aforementioned M. and Dame Burgevin against said M. Galopin as with wife Marguerite Burgevin, daughter, who is deceased; both with Claude Theodore Gallopin, said daughter of M. and Dame Gallopin and granddaughter of said M. and Dame Burgevin .... a contract of marriage of said M. and Dame Gallopin passed before notaries Masle and Boucher the 20th of June 1699 …. Here we see that Jean Baptiste Galopin married Marguerite Burgevin on the June 20, 1699, had a daughter, Claude Theodore Gallopin, and that Marguerite died before August 22, 1704. Jean Baptiste Galopin married a second time to Anne Marie Madeleine Bonnetsometime between 1704 and 1709. Their first child of record, Anne Madeleine, was born 20 Dec 1709. Vic.1 |
