| Birth* | 1670 | Joanna Goodson was born in 1670 at Isle of Wight County, VA, For a period of time I guessed at this birthdate based on the following thoughts: Joanna was called Floid in her father's will so her marriage to Matthew Lowry must have happened after that date. She bore two sons, Matthew and James Lowry to her second husband and that would limit her age to mid thirties at time the Lowry boys born. I subtracted 30 something from 1724 and came up with the estimated birth date. However, while entering the data for the land purchase in 1711by Thomas and Francis it dawned on me that its possible the Lowry children were step children. This allows me to push her birth date back. Don Floyd also thinks her birthdate is about 1675. |
| She was the daughter of Edward Goodson and Mary Phillips. | ||
| MARRIAGE* | circa 1690 | She married Thomas Floyd circa 1690 Note from MVW in 4-04: It appears that Matthew Lowry her second husband) knew and/or was a friend of Joanna's first husband, Floyd. Therefore, I suspect her first husband was named Thomas since Matthew and Thomas owned adjoining property. Also, Thomas Floyd witnessed a 1711 land sale in Isle of Wight where Thomas Pitt sold land to Matthew Lowry. Thomas Pitt was the father of aHester Pitt who married into the Bridger family. The Goodsons and Bridger family were neighbors. On the other hand Don Floyd has this opinion:The Francis Floyd who was witness to the sale of land on June 8, 1698, by Richard Reynolds Sr. to Richard Reynolds Jr., is a candidate for being the first husband of Joanna Goodson. The deed noted that the land was in occupation of Edward Goodson, William West, John Tyler and Richard Reynolds. Edward Goodson, of course, was the father of Joanna Goodson. This Francis Floyd may have died about 1720.1 |
| MARRIAGE* | after 1724 | This date seems likely since his two sons did not appear to be minors when their mother died in 1736; She is called Joan Floid in her father's will dated 1722.2 |
| Death* | 1736 | She died in 1736 at VA She had four children by her first marriage to a Floid: Francis, Thomas, George, and Joseph Floid. Her executor was George Floid so he likely was the eldest. She is called Floid in her father's will dated 1724 meaning that her second marriage to Matthew Lowry took place after that date. She must have been rather young as she bore two more children following her second marriage or the two Lowry children were step sons which I believe is more likely. |
| Married Name | circa 1690 | As of circa 1690,her married name was Floyd. |
| Married Name | after 1724 | As of after 1724,her married name was Lowry. |
| Will* | 30 March 1736 | She left a will on 30 March 1736 at VA She is called "widow of the lower parish" and lists sons James and Matthew Lowry. Also, mentions Francis, Thomas, George and Joseph Floid with executor being George (oldest?).3 |
| Note* | 2003 | In 2003 This lengthy note from Don Floyd whom I have high regard for offers some insight. To Tom Alexander: I have read your April 2, 1999, posting with much interest. I think I can add some information while asking you for a clarification on some of your points. You noted that you found a Francis Floyd in Edgecombe County, N.C., and that you believe him to be descended from Francis Floyd of Isle of Wight. So do I. I do know that the Edgecombe Francis Floyd was the son of Joane (Joanne, Joan, Joanna) Goodson Floyd Lowery (Lowry), he along with four brothers: , Joseph, George and Thomas. This we know from her will of March 30, 1736. About four years later, on Nov. 14, 1741, Thomas Floyd (still living is Isle of Wight) sold his property in Isle of Wight totaling 150 acres, possibly his inheritance, to Joseph Atkinson for 20 pounds. The property was located at, around or near Cypress Swamp and Beaver Dam Branch. The next month, on Dec. 12, 1741, Thomas Floyd appeared as a witness to a Edgecombe deed in which Thomas West and wife Sarah sold 300 acres on the southside of Swift Creek to Capt. William Kinchin (Kinchen) of Northampton County, N.C. In 1756, Thomas Floyd bought that same 300 acres (apparently) from William Kinchen (Kinchin) along with 100 other acres on the northside of Swift Creek. I have not been able to find a deed for Thomas Floyd in Edgecombe until 1747, and then he was selling property, not buying it, to George Bell (in 2006 I do not know who this George Bell is, but the Bells were significant in the family and the area - MVW) of Edgecombe, 200 acres on the northside of Swift Creek, part of a patent to John Spier. On Feb. 20, 1754, John Speir sold 200 acres adjoining Thomas West on the southside of Swift Creek to Matthew Lowery, the apparent half brother of Thomas Floyd, both of whom seemed to like to live in the same vicinity. (This has to be a different Thomas than discussed above) Thomas Floyd and wife Ann continued buying and selling land until about 1790 after which Thomas died (between 1790 and 1795). Ann wrote her will in 1795, noting that husband Thomas was deceased. I have not found a will for Thomas. Now, let’s go back to Isle of Wight County, Va. Francis Floyd, most probable brother of Thomas Floyd, on Dec. 8, 1755, sold Joseph Atkinson (the same Joseph Atkinson who bought land from Thomas Floyd) 150 acres at, around or near Cypress Swamp and Beaver Dam Branch (the same area where Thomas Floyd’s land was). Then Francis moved to Edgecombe County near brother Thomas. Why Francis waited almost 15 years to join brother Thomas is unknown. Francis Floyd didn’t have a lot of time to leave a real estate trail in Edgecombe County since he died in 1761 but at some point he bought from William Kinchen 288 acres on the northside of Swift Creek (the same area where Thomas Floyd lived). Francis willed 140 acres of this same land, including the manor plantation, to his son Palaman (Parraman, Parham) who in 1772 sold it to Thomas Floyd, his uncle. The rest of Francis’s property apparently went to his other children: Cyrus, Delilah, Benjamin, Sadisha and Elizabeth. Note Benjamin. His name appears in the 1790 federal census for Nash County, N.C., he along with Thomas Floyd and Pinnuel Floyd, the latter of whom is connected in some way to this line, perhaps a son of Thomas. Other sons of Thomas Floyd were Shadrick, Amos and Fedrick, all of whom got nothing when Ann Floyd died. She gave it all to daughter Ann Jackson, wife of Josiah Jackson. Actually, granddaughtger Mahala Jackson got a featherbed. I am descended from Thomas Floyd through his son Fedrick, who ended up in Georgia, living in Pulaski County (in an area that is now Bleckley County). According to your information, I also am descended from Francis Floyd, who you say was the husband of Joanne (Joane, Joanna, Joan) Goodson Floyd, later to become the wife of Matthew Lowery. Do you have proof or evidence that Francis was the husband of Joanne? Also do you have proof or evidence that Francis was the son of Nathaniel Floyd, the early immigrant (1637)? Sorry, I can help you very little on your Francis Floyd of Rowan County, N.C. He is not mentioned in Francis Floyd’s will in 1761 as an heir. And he could not have been the son of Francis Floyd and Joanne Floyd, since they already had a Francis, namely the one who died in 1761. The only thing I have on your Francis is that he was listed in the 1790 census in Rowan County. He had in the household one male under the age of 16 and six females, “including head,” which I take to be the wife. The 1790 census in Rowan also shows a John Floyd with two females, “including head.” Your note on the Bodie references is interesting. It suggests that Francis, John, Joseph, George and Thomas made up the generation succeeding Nathaniel Floyd. Actually, they would succeed the Francis Floyd who was married to Joanne. I do not know what happened to John, Joseph and George. However, a John Floyd shows up in the Edgecombe will of George Portis in 1775, listed as John Floyd alias Portis, the executor of the estate. Don’t know what to make of this. Does it mean that George Portis adopted John Floyd? Or was he perhaps an illegitimate child who initially was given his mother’s name and then took his father’s name for inheritance purposes? I don’t know what the law was concerning these matters. George Portis specifically called him his son in the will. He is thereafter referred to simply as John Portis. Benjamin Floyd is listed as a witness to the will of George Portis, and Benjamin was a son of Francis and Elizabeth Floyd. In any event, the year 1775 may be too late for the John who was the son of Francis and Joanne Floyd. Donald Floyd Note - This is all very convoluted and should only be used for further research -MVW 2006. |
| Note | 2004 | In 2004 at VA I have been through Isle of Wight County Virginia Deeds, Court Orders and guardian bonds and am coming to the conclusion that the original settler was Nathaniel Floyd and that Nathaniel had four sons (not sure how I concluded there were four sons) one of whom married Joanna Goodson and together they had three sons named Joseph, Thomas and Francis. Francis #1 son of Nathaniel (born 1668 or earlier) witnessed land sale in 1698 & 1704. In 1705 the land described as:"where Francis lived" was sold and in 1710 he witnessed a marriage contract and in 1711 he and his brother Thomas #1 witnessed together. Francis #1 must have been born about 1670 in order to be old enough to witness in 1698. That makes him too old to be the son of Joanna Goodson. Likewise for Thomas #1 (I estimate that Thomas was vorn about 1680 so he would be about 35 when he married Joanna. |
