| | AGNES AND MICHAEL MC DERMOTT |
| Birth* | 29 May 1865 | Michael F. McDermott was born on 29 May 1865 at DeWitt, IA. |
| | He was the son of John A McDermott and Ellen King. |
| MARRIAGE* | 29 May 1893 | He married Agnes Melissa Ennis, daughter of Edward Thomas Ennis and Brigid Ann Egan, on 29 May 1893 at Nuptual Mass, Holstein, IA, Married at the newly built Catholic Church. |
| Death* | 5 September 1914 | He died on 5 September 1914 at Ida Grove, IA, at age 49 He was killed with a steam engine on what was then called the Holstein road (close to the entrance of the present Ida County Fair Grounds). The weight of the engine was too much for the bridge, causing the bridge to cave in, sending the machine to the ravine below. The following is a quotation from his obituary that appeared in the September 10,1914, Holstein Advance: “The deceased was popular throughout the northern part of Ida County, in fact, he was a man who made many friends and had the faculty of retaining friendship when once gained. He was highly respected in his home vicinity, which can readily be assumed from the fact that, although normally a Republican township, his neighbors were always ready to lend their support at election time when he could be induced to accept a public office, although he was a Democrat. After the death of her husband, Agnes continued to operate the farm with the help of her sons. A lawsuit was filed against the county, as the bridge had been condemned and was ordered to be replaced prior to the accident. The case was tried and lost in the district court. Attorneys Matt and Pete White, brothers-in-law of Agnes, appealed the case to the State Supreme Court, where the ruling was overturned. In 1928, Agnes retired and moved to Sioux City. On March 11, 1947, Agnes passed away while visiting her son, Harold, at his home in Holstein. |
| Biography* | | In 1886, he came with his parents to Ida County, Logan Township. While engaged in farming, Michael also operated a threshing outfit in his locality. On Sentember 5. 1914 he met a tragic death while crossing a wooden bridge that collapsed. |
